Route Options
San Xil Route (Shorter route)
Distance: 18 km (11.1 miles)
Difficulty: Moderate to difficult
Terrain: Climbing and rolling hills with dirt forest paths.
Samos Route (Longer route)
Distance: About 25 km (15.5 miles)
Difficulty: Moderate
Terrain: Follows the valley floor with less steep climbing, though includes some road walking
Highlights: Passes the historic Monastery of Samos

San Xil Route (Shorter, ~18 km / 11 miles)
Triacastela: Stock up on all your food and water.
A Rúa / Small Hamlets: This mountain path passes tiny villages with almost no open shops or bars.
Donativo Stands: You may pass a seasonal, local volunteer or donation-based snack/water table run by artists or locals, but do not rely on it being open.
Samos Route (Longer, via Monastery, ~25 km / 15.5 miles)
Triacastela: Fill your water bladder and pack snacks before you exit the town.
Freituxe: Has a small snack bar or local stop roughly halfway through.
Samos: Features full cafe and restaurant services right by the famous Monastery of Samos.
Sarria: Larger city grocery and cafe- all necessities.

Start early. The section starting at Sarria can be very busy and is a very different hike from the previous sections of the Camino.
If you carry a day pack, always carry your rain gear. Galicia is known for its rainy weather.

Sarria is different from what I expected and is bigger than I thought it would be. The weather is rainy and changes every few hours. The terrain has changed. It seems flatter—or maybe I just got a lot stronger over the past few weeks. That Eva!
